What the code of practice recommends
Emergency lighting has to work when the mains supply fails, so it needs regular testing. The code of practice, BS 5266-1, recommends:
- Every month: a short functional test of each light, to check it comes on when the supply is cut. This can usually be done by your own staff.
- Every year: a full-duration test, where each light runs on its battery for its full rated time (often three hours), carried out by a competent person.
- Records of every test and any faults, kept in a log book.
What the annual test includes
- A full-duration test of every emergency light
- A check of each fitting for damage, and that signs and lenses are clean and visible
- A record of any light that failed or didn’t last its rated time
- Certification and results for your records
- A reminder before the next annual test is due
A full-duration test drains the batteries, which then take time to recharge. We’ll agree a time with you so the building isn’t left without emergency lighting while people are in it.
Your monthly checks
The monthly test is quick: switch the lights to battery for a short time using the test key switch, check each one lights, and write down the result. If you’re not sure where your test switches are or how to do it safely, ask us during the annual visit and we’ll show whoever will be doing it.
Common questions
How often should emergency lighting be tested?
BS 5266-1 recommends a short functional test every month and a full-duration test once a year, with the results recorded. The annual test should be carried out by a competent person.
What happens if a light fails?
We record it in your results and tell you straight away, so it can be put right. Until it is, think about whether the area it covers is safe to use after dark or in a power cut.
